WOMEN'S RIGHT OF INHERITANCE: Women's Property Right Still a Major Issue in Nigeria (a Legal Perspective).

Image
Image credit: OtownGist. The crux of this problem. Started with the fact that women have no identity of their own. At birth, they are their fathers, at marriage, they are their sons, at their husband's death, they are their sons.  For a person who is never her own being but owned by others, it only makes sense that property cannot own a property. Which is why our approach to addressing these issue must address it at the root cause.  Recently, the news broke out that The late elder statesman and former Ohanaeze Ndigbo President -General, Chief (Engr. Dr. ) Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has left behind a final Will that 'bans his wife, Lolo Frances from remarrying'. Apparently, if she chooses to remarry, she stands to forfeit the properties inherited.  This news coincided with the presently trending shocking story of Ifunanya , a girl who could not reach her father for six months, suspecting something was wrong, came back to her village to find out that her aunt's and uncles...

THE SUNK COST FALLACY: The Art of Breaking Up.

Image
If you've listened to Beyonce's sing Jolene remake "Jolene, don't come for my man... I raised that man". It's safe to say you've  just  jirate to sunk cost fallacy.  You're on a ship, a long and strenuous journey. You've expended time, spent money and exhausted energy. 2/3rd of the journey have being covered, then you hit a rock and the boat became faulty, you wouldn't take you all the way to the last lap.  You have your eyes on a set destination, but if you insist on going, the ship would sink along side you. but there's another ship going back to shore you left days ago.  Now here's the dilemma: -Going back would amount to an effort in futility, insisting on pushing forward would lead to the ultimate collapse of the ship and you.  What would you do? I know some of us would be quick to say "there's no dilemma at all, I'll simply hop on the saving ship and go back". However, you look back, time, money, energy, days, yea...

TOKENISM: The Inequitable Side To DEIs and Inclusivity Programs.

Image
"While DEI programs are great, they offer partial solutions to systemic oppression, they are half-baked reliefs, they are not end points. Hence, effort should go further than quota systems and seek to dismantle institutionalised and systemic barriers that creates breeding grounds for systemic oppression" TOKENISM refers to the superficial attempt to include a marginalised or oppressed group in other to avoid criticism or put on an appearance of progression. The term was coined by the US sociologist Rosabeth Moss Kanter in the late 1970s to describe a situation where marginalised people take up tokens functions within a social group.  Tokenism could be unintentional, other times, it could just be used as a tool to shut down activists or protesters by throwing bread crumbs their way, without actually remedying the problem. TOKENISM is bad because: ✖️ Recognition of problem with minimal effort at redressing it: Tokenism recognises existing structure of marginalisation, however,...

FETISH MINING: A Look Into the Digitisation of Gender Based Violence.

Image
Fetish mining is as old as man. However, the rise of social media can be credited with digitising of Gender Based violence, such that, previously overlooked GBVs have crept their way to mainstream stage, never-heard-of GVBs are being given a name and coverage, and people often, but wrongly credit their recent media coverage as the overdoings of woke culture on a not-so-serious affair. Fetish mining is one of those GBVs that was overlooked, but with the rise of social media, it presence has become so pronounced, such that, even UNDERAGED content creators are targets of fetish miners. Fetish relates to an object of fixation that turns someone on usually in a sexual way. Fetish shaming, as the name suggests involves shaming someone for having a fetish.  Fetish mining on the other hand is a form of GBV and sexual exploitation that has to do with involving an unsuspecting person in fetish relates activities without their knowledge.  Fetish mining is NOT fetish shaming becaus...

PASSIVE GOODNESS VERSUS ACTIVE GOODNESS: Your guide to a more equitable relationship.

Image
There are serious relationship issues that are not necessarily red flags, but that doesn't make them less of a deal breaker.  I find it imperative to make this post because these very serious issues are usually embodied by the so-called GOOD GUYS. And I am not taking about the Nigerian patriarchal woman version of good guy, I am talking about men who are objectively good to woman, men who can stay in a room with a drunk woman and she would be safe.   However, they embody some serious behavioural flaws like: ✖️ Poor hygiene. ✖️ Doesn't participate domestically. ✖️ Lazy and not driven. ✖️ Doesn't stand up for his wife. ✖️ Does not actively support his partner's ambitious. We women are used to men being generally unkind/misogynistic towards us, so when we meet a good guy, WE TEND TO BE GRATEFUL and that gratitude includes overlooking many BEHAVIOURAL FLAWS or 'smaller' red flags. This is because when you are used to poor treatment, the barest minimum becomes a lu...

AN ALL WOMEN CELEBRITY JOYRIDE TO SPACE: A women empowerment move or or space tourism.

Image
Image credit: Blue Origin "what did they do up there that would benefit women and girls down here?" - Olivia Munn. In a world where women are expected to cater to the community- be a mother, assume wifely duties and be a role model, living for oneself is rebellion. Women, especially women in the limelight are expected to live for the community. The role of a role model is hoisted upon us and we are supposed to use that as a mental restraint. When next we want to choose a meal to eat, a clothe to wear, a party to go to, we must remember the imaginary eyes right there with us in the bedroom and and ask ourselves "what will the community want" before making a choice. On April 14th 2025, The recent case of the all women crew involving Kerianne Flynn; Aisha Bowe, a former NASA engineer, Lauren Sanchez, singer-songwriter Katy Perry and CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King that went to space bussed and spinned many headlines. Olivia Munn who described the trip as gluttonous a...

THIRD PARTY HARASSMEN: All You Need To Know About It

Image
Susan has just been employed as a marketer in AB&C bank. It is her job to secure new customers who will open account with the bank. The bigger the deposits they make, the more money she earns. A client she is trying to secure keeps pressuring her for sexual favours in exchange for his deposit. The bank management pretends not to know what their marketers encounter on the field. In fact, they have a policy prohibiting workers form having unprofessional relationships with clients, YET, they do nothing to protect the employees whose payments are at the mercies of the client. The policy is just to safeguard the company from liability.  Ken is a nurse attendant at Holly Hospital. After attending to a patient, he turned his back to leave and the patient 'playfully' slapped his behind, leaving him in shock. His superior said there's nothing to be done. The patient is not an employee. Sean, a VIP client insists that a White, male doctor must be the one to treat him because h...
