WOMEN'S PROPERTY RIGHT IN NIGERIA: What You Must Know to Protect Yourself!

Image
So many Nigerian women I encounter during the course of divorce are grossly mistaken about what the law has to say about their property rights and the effect of this is that, they kept making COMPROMISE AGAINST INTEREST during the course of the marriage, thinking that the law protects them.  By the time the marriage has broken down, they discover too late because they've spent their youth labouring for nothing.  Some Nigerian women even think that after divorce you get 50% of his property. NO SISTER, YOU DON'T, that is the USA not a Nigerian. Upon divorce there's nothing like 50/50 property split in Nigeria. ❌❌❌ During divorce proceedings, there is something called SETTLEMENT Property. This is where the court divides your assets both joint and separate assets. To be entitled to any assets you must show that the asset is in your name or provide RECEIPT, HARD EVIDENCE of your financial contribution to the purchase of that asset! You see how that works??? What to do to inc...

UNDER-UTILISED MATRIMONIAL CAUSES IN NIGERIA YOU SHOULD KNOW!

Image
Many people who approach the family court in Nigeria often go there to get a divorce but Family law in Nigeria is not all about divorce!!!! There are sooo many matrimonial causes that Nigerians are neither aware of nor taking advantage of.  Let me explain them as briefly as possible. And by this, I mean you can approach any High Court to enforce these matrimonial rights: 💥1. DIVORCE: This is the most popular matrimonial cause. You're basically telling the court that you no longer want to remain married.  In Nigeria, there are only 7 reasons for divorce- ✅ Refusal to consummate the marriage (first sex after wedding) ✅ Adultery. ✅ Intolerable behaviour (eg abuse, cruelty, neglect etc). ✅ Desertion (living apart for more than 3 years. Here, divorce is automatically granted). ✅ Living apart for more than 2 (here, consent of the other party is needed for it to be granted). ✅ Failure to restore conjugal rights ✅ Being missing for seven years and you don't know where they are. The l...

CAN MEN BE FEMINISTS?: The Role of Male Allyship.

Image
Ezra Olubi, the co-founder of paystack shook the internet this week when a myriad of his 2010-2012 tweets surfaced.  He authored more than 30 posts where he casually talked about dating and rxping children, cats, contacting STI from his non consensual relationships with cats and the likes. Even more is the fact that he is indeed a man who strategically surrounded and barricaded himself with very prominent Nigerian feminists as friends and this includes gifting them huge financial favours. He also identified as feminists, progressive, queer and was in open relationship with many women some of whom were progressive leaning.  In the wake of his unveiling we found out he had so many affairs with employees including many cases of abuse as detailed by his ex girlfriend Max. Above all, he was very rich so he had the funds to maintain his façade. This very troubling situation raised the issue that has plagued the feminist movement- Can men be feminists? Arguments against male f...

A CALL TO COMMUNITY ACCOUNTABILITY: Justice for Ochanya #justiceforochanya

Image
📷: Citizen news Since Ochanya's case started trending, I refused to search out why it was trending again.   Honestly I just wanted to DETACH. It was my only way of clinging onto sanity a world not designed for half the population of the world who look like me.  These days I find myself scrolling past hashtags or pretending not to see. DETACHING. I even stopped reading the news unless they pop up on my feed because, like James Baldwin said "To be relatively conscious is to be in rage almost all the time". I was in rage, I was drained.  ...but the news kept popping on my timeline, almost as if she was forcing me to see her.  And honestly, the question that plagued me was "WHERE WERE WE IN ALL THESE?" It made me realise how grossly insufficient & convenient my activism is.  It also made me realise how class privilege has elevated my position in life above that of many women and girls. I'm not rich, but at the same time, I'm not poor. I didn't co...

A TIMELINE OF MEN'S APOLOGY: Sincerity or Quick Getaway?

Image
Image of Miss Universe contestants (2025) walking out in solidarity with Miss Mexico. 📷: people.com When we talk about apology, the first thing that comes to our mind is penitence, someone feeling sorry for their actions. However , for many men, apology is just a quick getaway from accountability. They've said sorry so they expect it to all go away. The recent case with the miss Universe, 2025 highlighted this. Mr Nawat, the director of the pre pageant orientation in Thailand was wrath with Ms Fátima Bosch (Miss Mexico) for not participating in a group photo which wasn't mandatory. And when she tried explaining, he decided to rain a torrent of sexist rhetorics on her.  He called her dumb and told her to shut up and be respectful to him as he did not give her permission to speak.  She told him he had no respect for her as a woman who why expect same from her? Enraged by her refusal to act passive and submissive, he decided to humiliate her further by asking that she be ...
